Walking on a Balance Beam

Have you ever walked on a balance beam?

We all may have.

Was it easy?

As a child, I believe it was fairly easy to walk the balance beam. We may have fallen off a few times, but we got right back on.

The balance beam was low to the ground, playground style.

Do you remember running on the balance beam?

That’s because we were full of energy and excitement! We knew we could make it across.

Where Are You at Now

What about lately; have you walked a balance beam?

The balance beam is now higher (like the one used in the Olympics).

How do you think you would do as an adult?

Most of us would be up for the challenge. We may even have a lot of confidence (especially if we’re trying to show our kids we’re still athletic or someone challenged us).

Then what happens?

You’re taller now, gained more weight…aged!

You fall off.

The climb back on is a bit challenging, you make it.

Nice and tall, you try again.

You get a little bit further, loose your balance (you tried to rush it) and you fall off again.

Now you’re tired.

Do you give up or try again?

 

In Need of Balance

While talking to a friend of mine recently, she expressed feeling overwhelmed.

She talked about life, work and kids.

The kids were sick, injured and “acting out”.

Her job was demanding and she expected a lot from herself.

She found herself becoming frustrated, irritated; on the verge of possibly becoming ill.

We’ve all been there.

Then I asked:

What do you need the most right now?

Balance“, she said.

I definitely couldn’t have agreed with her more.

Living a Balanced Life

How do we live a balanced life?

First, I would say, expect the unexpected.

Too many times, we set ourselves up.

We picture life, sometimes, with an obscure view.

High expectations, we have.

Like walking on the balance beam, we expect to make it across, but sometimes we fall.

I’m not saying to expect to fall, but what I am saying is if you do, don’t be surprised; don’t take it to heart.

Get back up and learn the cycle of life.
